For that reason you can't write with music playing, and anyone who says he can is either writing badly, or not listening to the music, or lying. You need to hear what you are writing, and for that you need silence.
Another thing that is quite different in writing a book as a practicing newspaperman is that if you look at what you've written the next morning and you think you didn't get it quite right, you can fix it.
Everybody talks about wanting to change things and help and fix, but ultimately all you can do is fix yourself. And that is a lot. Because if you can fix yourself, it has a ripple effect.
