Perhaps... I mean there are people who defend that it as an art. I do not. I like it but it's not an art form as far as I am concerned, and yet it's a similar thing, once you can't land those jumps, you are disqualified - that precludes it from ever becoming a serious art form.
I think I realized it was an art form at the beginning, but it took me a really long time before I was able to view what I was performing myself as an art form.
Also, since art is a vehicle for the transmission of ideas through form, the reproduction of the form only reinforces the concept. It is the idea that is being reproduced. Anyone who understands the work of art owns it. We all own the Mona Lisa.
Look. Art knows no prejudice, art knows no boundaries, art doesn't really have judgement in it's purest form. So just go, just go.
